You’re Invited to Our December 2nd Gathering

December is here again and that means it’s time for another gathering in the back room of the Jersey Lilly on Whiskey Row to capture your ideas for Prescott Alternative Transportation’s work in 2015. Please mark your calendar for 5:30p.m. until whenever, Tuesday, December 2 so we can learn about your concerns and suggestions for solving them. We will have maps and tear sheets and sticky notes for a roomful of people who care about improving conditions for bicyclists and pedestrians. Along with all the discussions and sharing we will have homemade finger food and a cash bar.

Your ideas will help us formulate our 2015 work plan, building on our recent successes. The completion of White Spar Road stands out as a particular triumph for PAT in 2014 (read more in our July e-newsletter) and shows how persistence can result in great road redesigns. More recently, we are celebrating the start of construction of the next leg of the Greenways Trail between Lincoln Avenue and the Rodeo Grounds. Meanwhile, we continue our work toward more extensions of this popular trail system, possibly even a connection to the Peavine Trail.

On the Safe Routes to Schools front, just last month, 315 students participated in our Walk-to-School Day events with the highest participation from Washington Elementary School at 80 students. We are gearing up for Bike Rodeos in the spring and motivating parents and youth to be more active and healthy by walking and bicycling.

On December 2nd, as we talk with all of you and gather your ideas on maps and flip chart paper, we will also be celebrating Jim Knaup and the many years of dedicated service he has given to this effort. Jim has stepped down as president so that he can focus his time on helping with PAT’s events. Join us as we thank Jim for his great work.

This gathering is an important means of garnering ideas from our members and supporters each year. We hope to see you at Jersey Lilly on December 2nd. If by chance you can’t make it, don’t despair. We always want to hear your ideas. You can call us at 928-708-0911, email your ideas to pat{at}prescottbikeped.org, or drop by our office at 309 E. Gurley in Prescott.

Cranksgiving Results

Yesterday we enjoyed one of our best Cranksgiving events yet! Nearly fifty hearty riders turned out to meet the challenge of bicycling to designated stores and hauling back their donations of food for the Coalition for Compassion and Justice (CCJ). Many riders rode in teams. Others had decked themselves and their bikes out in flashy costumes. After weighing the hauls of imperishables and accounting for the huge pile of frozen turkeys the riders delivered, we estimate the total haul at right around 800 pounds of delicious Thanksgiving food. All this great food is now on its way to needy families in the area, thanks to CCJ! And thanks to all of you riders for joining in the fun of giving this holiday season!

Year-end Donations

By Russ Willis, President

As you read earlier in this newsletter, 2014 has been an exciting year for us at Prescott Alternative Transportation.

We would not be able to do any of this without your steadfast support. This time of year is an excellent time to contribute to PAT as we prepare for the coming year. Just fifty dollars covers the direct costs of a Walk-to-School Day event. One hundred dollars will help us create visual materials that show decision makers how this area will benefit from better bicycle and pedestrian provisions.

This year we are adding a new opportunity in honor of Jim Knaup’s tireless efforts. He has inspired us to make the final push to getting the city to adopt the draft bicycle and pedestrian plan, which would include reactivating a bicycle/pedestrian advisory committee and dedicating a part-time public works staffer to bike/ped issues. We are seeking contributions of $250 or more in order to launch this campaign. With Jim’s example in mind, please consider increasing your contribution to ensure we can hit the new year in full stride.

Whether you can give at our basic membership level of thirty dollars or at these higher program and campaign levels, we need your support right away. You can help us set the stage for the coming year. You can send your check to:

Or donate online with a credit card by clicking “Donate” at www.prescottbikeped.org

We hope you and those close to you will thrive in the coming year with lots of opportunities for fun walks and bike rides. Thank you for your continued support of PAT’s work!

End Notes

We’re gearing up for a super 2015 with lots of progress for bicycling and walking in the Prescott area. But we can’t make that happen without your help. Please join us on December 2nd to offer your ideas. Also, consider pitching in as a volunteer. We’ll be forming committees early in the year to coincide with the projects you help us choose. And whether or not you can offer your ideas and time, we can always use your monetary donations to keep everything running smoothly.

Readers of this newsletter are Prescott Alternative Transportation. Without your passion for bicycling and walking in our community, there would be no PAT. Please continue to stay involved. And if you haven’t connected with us for awhile, we’d love to welcome you back into the fun and fray of bike/ped advocacy. Come by, email us at pat{at}prescottbikeped.org or call 928-708-0911 anytime to take part in our activities. You can also find more details at www.prescottbikeped.org
